Warasa Garifuna Drum School

Sponsor a Local Child’s Drum Lesson

Sponsor a local child’s drum lesson.

The Garifuna culture is under threat, and the language, dance and music of the Garifuna people have been designated by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in need of protection.

Warasa offers lessons to local children for a low price in order to cover costs, but sadly still some local children cannot afford to pay.  If you would like to sponsor a local child with real interest in learning, the send us an email to warasadrumschool@gmail.com, or click on the “Donate” button below and leave us a message to let us know how many months you are providing sponsorship for. We recently completed lessons through the Child Safe School’s project, funded by US Embassy in Belize. This was a program for local at risk children. Three of the students (three Standard 3 school girls) show great promise and your sponsorship would mean that we can guarantee their continued learning.

Suggested sponsorship amounts (covers two lessons per week):

  • $30USD: One child for one month
  • $60USD: One child for two months
  • $120USD: One child for six months

With the parents’ permission, we will share photos and videos of their progress with you.

Currently (August 2020) the drum school is unable to host guests since March 2020 due to COVID-19, however the thatch and drums still need ongoing maintenance for when we are able to start hosting Belizean and international tourists again as well as local children. If you are able to support Warasa with a donation during these challenging times we would be very grateful!

  • Donations are secure via credit/debit card. You do not need a Paypal account to donate – donations will be routed into Ruth Sherratt/McDonald’s overseas Paypal account and then withdrawn in Belize.
